EU Entry/Exit System Launching in November
As confirmed by the EU Commission, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) will be launched on November 10, 2024. The system will replace the current manual passport stamping and register the traveler’s name, type of travel document, biometric data, and the date and place of entry and exit from the EU.
Who is affected?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) applies to both short-stay visa holders (such as Indian nationals) and visa-exempt travelers (like U.S. nationals), who will be registered each time they cross an EU external border. Additionally, the system will record instances where foreign nationals are denied entry.
EU citizens, as well as nationals of Cyprus and Ireland, are exempt from this system. The same exemption applies to foreign nationals who are family members of EU citizens and hold valid residence permits. Certain other categories also fall outside the system’s scope, including intra-corporate transferees, researchers, students, individuals undergoing training, participating in voluntary service, involved in pupil exchange or educational projects, or working as au pairs. Foreign nationals with long-stay visas or valid residence permits are also exempt.
Exempt categories:
Holders of residence permits and long-stay visas
Nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and holders of Vatican City State or Holy See passports
Purpose of the EES
The EES aims to prevent irregular migration within the EU, limit overstays by third-country nationals, and streamline border checks with automated processes to enhance tracking and security. This contributes to better border security by safeguarding against potential threats from criminal activities and terrorism.
Tracking your allowable days within the EU
Once active, the EES will allow foreign nationals to monitor their remaining allowable days in the EU through this tool: Check how long you can stay - European Union (europa.eu).
