Court ruling may have potential consequences for Dutch nationals to regain Dutch nationality

The Highest Administrative Court in the Netherlands ruled on 12 February 2020 that automatic loss of Dutch nationality in case of residence outside the Netherlands for more than 10 years and possessing another citizenship in addition to Dutch nationality, may not be proportionate and in compliance with EU law in all instances.

To assess whether the principle of proportionality is met, the emphasis is placed on examining the (potential) negative consequences it may have for work or study purposes in the EU rather than focusing on the extent to which the individual still has ties with the Netherlands.
