Sinterklaas
December 5th

On December 5th, it’s time voor pakjesavond! The age old Dutch holiday of Sinterklaas will be celebrated a little differently this year, due to the restrictions surrounding covid-19. During the days leading up to December 5th, children put their shoe in front of the fireplace or heater, with a poem for Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) and a carrot for Americo, his horse. The next morning, nice kids will find a small present and/or candy (pepernoten!) in their shoe, left by Sinterklaas. Pakjesavond (present night) is celebrated on the evening of December 5th, and usually consists of an evening of exchanging gifts with family and friends (similar to Christmas).

However, Sinterklaas is not just an event for children, adults can enjoy this day as well. Lootjes trekken is a fun group event where you each get designated one other person in the group to buy or make a gift for, to exchange on pakjesavond. Due to covid-19, it is strongly recommended to keep the celebration small, with just your household and a maximum of three guests. An alternative is, of course, an online celebration, where you could send each other gifts and open them up together while video calling.
