Working Holiday Program for Japanese and Taiwanese nationals

As of 1 April 2020, nationals from Japan and Taiwan who are between 18 and 30 years of age can make use of the Working Holiday Program (WHP).

The WHP residence permit is intended to get to know the Dutch culture and society and can be obtained for a maximum of 1 year. WHP residence permit holders may follow a short study or course and perform incidental paid working activities to be able to finance part of their stay in the Netherlands without a work permit.

Annually, a maximum of 200 Japanese nationals and 100 Taiwanese nationals will be able to take part in the WHP. Japanese applicants can submit an application to the IND in the Netherlands after they obtained a valid proof of pre-registration for participation in the WHP from the Dutch embassy in Tokyo. Taiwanese applicants can start the process by submitting an application to the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office (NTIO) in Taipei.
